Phoenix Coyotes

CAP SPACE: $3.384M

May have gone over budget, but figure with new ownership they will want to make a big splash. Only two players are signed for more than 3 years: Michalek (8 years), and Gomez (4 years).

Aggressive forechecking and backchecking; a defensive core comprised of shutdown and puck-moving d-men; a top-10 PK; a top-10 faceoff winning percentage; and one of the best goaltenders the league saw in 2009-10. All that returns for the 2010-11 season. And what we lacked last year, scoring punch, has been added, and then some.

Alex Kovalev, Drew Stafford, Ryan Clowe and Scott Gomez join Shane Doan, Scotty Upshall, Matty Lombardi, and Radim Vrbata to give the Coyotes the best offensive core its had since coming to Phoenix. Also back are Marty Hanzal (aka "Joe Thornton's Worst Nightmare), Vern Fiddler, Dan Winnik, Lauri Korpikoski, and Paul Bissonnette, who provide the grit that tended to exhaust opponents last season and will only be better with this year's new offensive explosiveness.

Last year anything less than a playoff appearance would be a failure. We made the playoffs for the first time in 7 years. This year, a deep playoff run is the expectation.

We didn't do it with a massive overhaul by blowing up our core or dealing away our future. We kept our chemistry in tact on all of our lines, adding pieces to make the offense better.

Kyle Turris, Kevin Porter, Brett MacLean, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Chris Summers, Chad Kolarik, Mike Lee, Chris Brown, Nino Neddereitter, Emerson Etem and Jack Campbell will get all the time they need to develop. The Coyotes are in good shape for years to come.
