It's really too bad the Rangers didn't let him go. I really think it would benefit him in terms of skill development, experience and confidence.
In light of what a festering cesspool of infighting and failure the Russian World Junior Team ended up being, the Rangers not letting him go to the WJC earns an A+ in my book.

Edit: Although this is all with 20/20 hindsight... I was certainly doubtful about whether he should be withheld before the tournament began.
