This team has a very weak farm system and we are absolutely reliant on it to help resolve the continuous winger issue so to sell off a 2nd round pick which is a high quality prospect and whatever other mystery prospects of ours for someone who most likely wont be on our roster next fall wouldnt be an extremely smart move, especially after 3 years of doing that. It's fine if it's a one time thing but this has started to become habit.
Pittsburgh has a unique cap structure, acquiring deadline/mid-season talent is likely to be the norm until the day one of Crosby/Malkin/Staal leaves the team. It could also give us a leg-up in re-signing a guy like Whitney, for example, in the off-season.

Top 9:

Kunitz - Crosby - Guerin
Fedotenko - Malkin - Whitney
Cooke - Staal - Kennedy

That looks like an extremely balanced lineup heading into the home-stretch and playoffs. Unlike last year, however, I think Shero may have to focus on shoring up the D if injuries/poor play continues and that could throw a wrench into acquiring a guy like Whitney with his $3M+ cap hit.
