If Blackburn has seriously been working out on the ice for 6 months, I would imagine he will eventually be able to play. If he really was done, I think he would have realized it by now.
I wouldn't expect reality to hit for a while yet. After all, there has been significant improvement since the surgery and Blackburn is so young and has already come so close to his dream. He's going to fight it as long as he can.

I remember how hard Cherneski worked to get back on the ice--through a number of painful surgeries, rehabs, through it all. And yet the writing was on the wall from the moment he shattered his knee cap. Some things just don't fix easy.
