If I were you I would take any opportunity to skate for transportation if you're going somewhere close. Even make up a reason--go get a Slurpee or something. As you know, when playing hockey, skating shouldn't be something you are thinking about, it shouldn't be a distraction. The only way to get better at skating is by actually doing it! Once you get more comfortable on skates you can focus on trying to handle the puck while skating. Still practice shooting like you are though, I think that's a good idea.

I gotta group of guys I play roller hockey with every weekend and you wouldn't believe how much some of them have improved over just a few months. The best way to get better is by playing with people who are above your level. Ask them for tips and watch what they do. You will improve fast. just hang in there it can be frustrating at first.
