This subject was actually just brought up about 2-3 weeks ago (regarding a CHL team here), and the news wan't good. To build an arena, it would have to come solely from a private investor. Both the cities of Reno and Sparks, as well as any form of state government, don't want anything to do with using state or federal funds towards the project.

Unless one of the large casino chains (Peppermill, etc.) in the area wants to fund the project, or somebody else with a lot of money comes along, there won't be any movement towards getting a hockey team, because there is no arena to put it in. The current multi-purpose arena's already built in Reno (Lawlor, REC) can't properly house an ice surface, from what I understand, and the Convention Center (which can, and is also where our last minor-pro team played, from 1995-98) doesn't want to permanently host a hockey franchise.

To be honest, even if the arena is built, I can't see any kind of hockey franchise surviving more than a season or two. I live in Reno, obviously, and I can tell you from experience; this isn't a hockey town, at all. There would be virtually no support, especially in a league as far down the ladder as the CHL.
