Series Preview: Bisons Host Evil Monkeys

SERIES PREVIEW: BISONS HOST EVIL MONKEYS

ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS
(18-1-1, 37 points, 1st place, #2 in OHT34)
MANITOBA BISONS
(12-6-2, 26 points, 2nd place, #4 in OHT34)

FRIDAY, JANUARY 29TH @ 7:00 CST [UMFM 101.5]
SATURDAY, JANUARY 30TH @ 7:00 CST
AT MAX BELL ARENA

The Evil Monkeys are coming! If you have been waiting for an opportune time to take in some CIS hockey, this is the weekend to do it. Friday night's game will also be on 101.5 UMFM.

Alberta has run away with first place in the CW and we'll have to see if they coast to the playoffs. The Bisons have the inside track on 2nd place and a decent weekend here would dishearten their rivals. Alberta keeps winning and they have to if they want to reach #1 in the CIS rankings ahead of UNB. IMO, at least one of the two will lose at least once this weekend. With an 11 point lead over 2nd place Manitoba the Evil Monkeys have 1st almost sewn up already.

On the other hand, both Calgary and Sask are on the road against the really desperate Regina and UBC teams. I thought that after last weekend UBC might throw in the towel. However, without pressure they could steal a point or two on home ice. Well, kinda home ice. Due to the Olympics they have to play in an alternative arena this weekend. The Cougars are coming off a bye week after having split with Sask. They won't be easy for Calgary.

The Bisons are the only team to defeat Alberta in regulation time. They should have a fair degree of confidence. However, the Bisons have been so-so since Christmas, splitting all three series thus far.

The Bisons have done very well on the defensive side thus far. Due to Steve Christie's goaltending and strong team-D they have surrendered only 52 goals, lowest in the league. However, Alberta has given up only 53 while splitting goaltending duties between Travis Yonkman and Real Cyr. On the offensive side Alberta has a big edge, with 108 goals compared to Manitoba's 59. In fact, Alberta has 6 of the league's top 10 scorers.

Around the CIS, Mike Danton has now made his debut for St. Mary's. They lost to Acadia 4-1, with Danton scoring the only goal.

Also, UBC will be playing Norway's Olympic team. Granted, Norway was one of the last qualifiers for the tournament. But if you want to get ready for Crosby and Ovechkin, I think you need tougher opposition than the Tweety-Birds. On the other hand, Team Canada won't be playing anybody.

Will the Evil Monkeys take a snooze?
