You're being unfair here.

First, Kovalchuk put the team over a barrel and threatened to leave for Russia the last time around. He's not as benevolent as you're saying he is.

Secondly, that team has had the worst luck of any team in the NHL. First, their star player kills a teammate. Then he wants out and Atlanta gets the best possible return they can in Marian Hossa. Unfortunately, Hossa is ticked because Ottawa shafted him by trading him immediately after signing him so he's in no mood to do the Thrashers any favours and leaves himself. Meanwhile, their can't miss prospect Kari Lehtonen has been killed with injuries.

That team should be a lot better off than it is. They never had a chance.
