Look at it this way, For the price of Zhitnik, who is a UFA at the end of the year, Buffalo upgrades an early to mid 2nd into a mid to late 1st and upgrades J.P. Dumont to Jeff Friesen. Doesn't seem so bad to me.
The Sabres goal for this season is to make the playoffs. Trading away their #1 d-man to move up in the draft and to swap Dumont, who has clicked with Briere, for Friesen isn't going to happen.

The improvement from Dumont to Friesen will not even come close to filling the void left on the Sabres blueline this year if they were to trade Zhitnik. And Regier is making deals that are heavily focused on improving the team this year.

Plus, Regier has said that he doubts that Zhitnik will get traded before the start of the season. The only way I see Zhitnik getting moved is in a deadline deal if the Sabres are out of contention for a playoff spot.

And I'm pretty sure a deal like this could be available then.

If the Sabres are out of it at the deadline, then this is a deal that could happen. But only if Dumont's chemistry with Briere fades.
