Also, I guess it's a mental thing for me. With my large stick, I held it like a golf club but as soon as I switched, I naturally slid my hand further down.

JA brings a very good point, using a shorter stick makes it easier to slide your hand down and arguably get more power on your shot as a result. In my experience, a longer stick benefits my stick handling at the cost of shooting in motion. You can learn to modify your shooting technique with a longer stick though.
