It's really going to be decided by who is simply ahead of him on the depth chart, what does the staff want to add to the blueline (i.e. More offense, grit, defensive responsibility, etc), and how well he can adjust to the speed of the NHL game. He's certainly strong enough to handle most NHL forwards.

I just hope people aren't setting the bar insanely high for the kid. In my opinion, he's really no longer on the road to becoming a 1st pairing guy. He's more Brad Stuart than Shea Weber.
That would be absolutely fine with me.

In a couple of years, I think Staal/MDZ will form a legitimate first pairing. If McDonagh can be a solid second pairing guy, I think we'll be in good shape going forward
