Paying him would have been a huge hit to their salary. If he was a Flyer (as John LeClair was when he scored his $9 million contract), he would have remained a Flyer. Why? Because the Flyers have more money to pay him.

You're reversing cause-and-effect. Anaheim decided not to pay him because he was a financial burden. With more money he would not BE a burden.
