If it were you or I, I'm sure a few weeks off would be warranted, and welcome. But these are professional athletes. They are receiving the best medical attention possible and routinely will come back from injuries that would keep a normal person out for much longer.

In any professional sport, the doctors usually trump anything the player or coach want. If they tell Gaborik that he's safe to play, but he'll be in pain, then it's up to him to decide if he can go or not. In that case, Torts is going to leave the decision up to Gaborik, as would most any coach in the same situation.

If it was a case where we didn't need Gaborik so desperately, then I'm sure they'd err more on the side of caution. But either way, if the doctors had said no, then he wouldn't have tried.
