CHL Odessa first team to clinch a playoff spot this year

I was running the numbers today, and found out that Odessa has already clinched a playoff berth in the CHL's Southern Conference.

"But Hans...", I hear you say, "... the Jackalopes only have 76 points, and five teams can finish with 79 or more... how does that clinch them the playoffs?"

Quite simply -- when you take into account the fact that Corpus Christi and Rio Grande Valley play each other head-to-head FIVE more times this season -- so while ONE of those two teams may get 79 points (if they swept all five games), it's impossible for BOTH to get more than 76 points. Even if all five games went to overtime, and were split nearly evenly between the teams, that would leave one of the teams with 77 points and the other with 76... and a maximum of 33 wins (where Odessa already has 36 wins and 76 points).

Thus, congratulations to Odessa for clinching the first North American minor-pro playoff spot of 2010.
