I play both, and whilst 2004 is a major improvement over 2003 in every facet including realsim, and is still very arcadey compared to ESPN 2k4.

It depends on your preference for hockey games. I enjoy playing the games in ESPN, because the gameplay is simply amazing, I have never seen such smart AI in a sports videogame, let alone a hockey game. And I enjoy NHL2004 for things such as dynasty mode, and simming seasons.

Overall I feel 2k4 is the better game, because it just plays so much better than 2004, but it does have bugs and issues such as a crappy franchise mode. 2004 has its strong points in dynasty mode and add-ons (pc version). But since you are on the Xbox, another thing to consider is online play, 2k4 supports Xbox Live! NHL2004 doesn't...
