It's official:

TORONTO -- Baseball is officially returning to the nation's capital.

The Intercounty Baseball League announced Wednesday that Ottawa has been awarded an expansion franchise that will play out of the 10,300-seat Ottawa Stadium, former home of the city's defunct triple-A franchise.

The team will be operated by Ottawa Stadium Group.

"Canada's oldest baseball League applauds the efforts and tenacity of the Ottawa Stadium Group in their quest and perseverance in obtaining a stadium lease for one of North America's state-of-the-art facilities," IBL commissioner Joe O'Neill said in a statement.

The franchise will announce its team name and head coach next week.

The Ontario-based IBL, which has been in operation since 1919, will grow to a nine-team league with the inclusion of Ottawa.

Franchises already exist in Barrie, Brantford, Guelph, Hamilton, Kitchener, London, Mississauga and Toronto.
