I had a similar problem where I broke my tibia (many years ago). I recall trying to get back on skates after the cast came off and had many problems:
Pain in the leg/ankle
SEVERE atrophy
And the biggest culprit was.....fear, I did not want to go through that again

Eventually, time was the best medicine. Work out off ice to gain balance, flexibility and strength. Go to your local stick and puck and just work on simple drills utilizing your edges. Also follow the advice your surgeon gave you!

To be honest, that leg injury was nearly 20 years ago. I just got back into hockey within the past year. I am in better shape and a better skater now (age 36) than before simply from identifying my weakness's (many) and working on them.

Like they say, this too shall pass

good luck
