Some types of protective gear can be like a car seatbelt - the majority of times you don't need it, but one time in a thousand you're glad you're wearing it.

If you're wearing the right sized gear, there should be very minimal exposed skin between your gloves and your elbow pads. Your gloves should extend almost halfway up your forearm and your elbow pads should come down your forearm and almost meet your gloves.
