The other thing is that Chelios made similar comments back in October:

Reminded contraction would cost the players jobs, Chelios didn't flinch. "Well, it'll cost jobs, but it'll make the league a better league," he said. "There's a lot of players -- especially a lot of guys that come over from Europe -- who are average players."

Granted, Chris Chelios is much more able than Sean Avery to comment on who is mediocre as he is a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame, however he's always been something of a meathead himself, and that comes through with these remarks. When the PA is trying to maintain a united front, it's pretty stupid for guys to be out there making remarks that will divide them along nationality lines.

I'd love for one of these reporters to challenge these guys to name names, give examples of players who aren't deserving of NHL jobs. Obviously they wouldn't, but it would be funny to listen to the try to worm their way out of answering gracefully.

I wonder if it every occurred to Chelios that were it not for a bunch of Euros, he would probably have retired without ever winning a ring after his rookie year. Lidstrom, Hasek, Datsyuk, Fedorov, Holstrom, Olausson, Fischer, a lot key players on that 2002 Wings team.
