the other is it's become more of a team game with smarter game plans. Individual skills do not win-out as much as it used to. But that's not to say Kovalchuk isn't going to steal the puck, race down and make a couple guys look bad, and put the puck past the goalie's stack of equipment either.

The talent level is better today than the 80s, but there was an absence of Euros and Soviets for the most part. Further, USA programs hadn't really taken hold. There's a much larger pool of players today than then, when it was predominantly Canadians (think they're still a majority, but not a vast majority).
