Why? How many free agents come to the Leafs strictly because the money is good? Heck, we have to turn down free agents, anyone remember Andrew Cassels coming and essentially begging the Leafs to sign him before he went to Columbus.

This fantasy world that some people believe is coming, where the Leafs, the Red Wings, the Flyers, the Rangers won't be able to sign the top free agents is just that, a fantasy. Yes, it'll be slowed down a bit, in the sense that we can't sign them to the bigger contracts as often, but seriously, players dream about playing in certain cities, and they'll still go there over going to one they didn't, when all other things are equal.
