Eric Lindros' first game

I came across a tape of Eric Lindros' first game: a 3-3 tie in Pittsburgh against the defending Cup Champs -- opening night 1992-93.

Some notes of interest:

It was ESPN's debut NHL broadcast (or so it was worded that way). Tom Mees, Al Morganti and Bill Clement in studio. Jim Schoenfeld and Gary Thorne broadcasting.

If Hall of Fame careers were made by one game, then Dominic Roussel would be inducted. 42 saves, including stopping Mario Lemieux on a shorthanded breakaway and stoning Jaromir Jagr who made an incredible fake on Shawn Cronin.

Brian Benning was tossed for spearing Lemieux.

Lindros' first NHL goal came 31 seconds into the third period to make the score 3-2 Pens.

Flyers trailed 3-1 after 2 and were thoroughly outplayed by the Pens, then two early third period goals tied the score and an apparent 4-3 lead, about a couple of minutes later, was wiped out after about a six-minute video review (Gary Thorne mentioned that the NHL suggested 2-2:30 minute reviews) even though Ron Hoggarth called it a goal. Close call, Brent Fedyk nudged the puck in with his forearm.

Preseason picks: Bill Clement said the Rangers would win the Patrick Division "by a mile." They finished in last place. Preseason odds listed on screen had the Rangers as 4-1 odds to win the Cup and favorites in the Patrick.

The talent level of Lemieux was amazing, incredibly brilliant; he scored 46 seconds into the game. We all know that but to revisit it is well

Glenn Mulvenna
made his lone appearance ever for the Flyers; 1 of just 2 NHL career games.

Flyers lineup: 29 Carkner, 19 Benning; 44 Cronin; 26 Gord Hynes; 2 Yushkevich; 3 Galley; 15 Doug Evans; 22 Butsayev; 11 Kaspar; 41 Mulvenna; 12 Paslawski; 88 Lindros; 8 Recchi; 18 Fedyk; 20 Dineen; 17 Brind' Amour; 25 Acton; 21 Brown; 33 Roussel (Beauregard backup).
