It was, I had never heard of Death Cab until five years later though! I just remember watching them and saying "yeah they sound like every other soft indie band" except the bassist was so stoned out of his mind he was just staring at the brick wall. Now of course I love Death Cab...
One of my all time favorites was when James Diers and Dave King did a duet on Valentine's Day at the Bryant Lake Bowl...Diers had his Telecaster and did vocals, Dave was on piano...and they did a mix of covers and a couple Love Cars songs. Of course, Dave KILLED it, what an amazing musician.
Also got to see Dave with 12 Rods before they split up, they did a show at Edina High School (where I went) for barely 30 people. Really strange, but they were great and chatted with us for a good long while afterwards.
But yeah, as a drummer, Dave is one of my top five influences all time...even if I can't get into Happy Apple at all.
