Call me crazy but I do things a bit differently.

1. jock
2. socks (pull above knees)
3. pants
4. skates
5. socks again (this time I pull them down to my ankles)
6. shin guards
7. pull socks up over shin guards, attach to girdle/jock, then tape socks

The reason being, that I prefer the way my shin guards feel when attached over the front of my skates. It's a little extra work, but it's a preference thing.
