The short answer: Sather is reserving Hartford for those players who have a future with the Rangers.

Why Purinton does not have a future in Gotham:

Dale can be turned very easily by a deft right wing. This, despite efforts last summer to improve his skating. If Slats has telegraphed nothing else with his rearguard acquisitions, it is that he considers "mobility" crucial on defense. if you cannot skate, you will not dress.

Purinton's long suit is fisticuffs. That's pretty much it with him. He's not much of a crease clearer. And he's a menace with the puck. The only real improvement he displayed in 2003-2004 versus previous seasons was that he did keep his head swivelling when posting in the low slot. But he still made some poor decisions to chase the puck behind the net.

And no matter how well he fights, the problem with having any blueliner provide enforcement duties is that his time in the sin bin leaves five defenders to do the work of six for 5, 7, 10 or 12-minute stretches.

Expect in the future that any Ranger enforcers will be forwards.
