Dale Purinton does
provide toughness on defense.
He cannot hit what he cannot catch. Even Jason Doig was better at hitting moving targets when he was a Ranger than is Dale.
No enemy forward is intimidated by Purinton. in fact, when he's on the ice, the puck is usually advanced into the Ranger zone
via his lane
because it is so easy to deke past him.
Can Dale fight?
But that's not "toughness on defense".
Jeff Beukeboom was toughness on d, Purinton is cheap shot on d. Heck Id rather have Big Bird McKenna as our enforcer. Even though he fell down all the time, at least he tried.
