I think many people have tried public skating, and either like it, or they absolutely hate it because it's such an unnatural way of moving. If people like it, and then get interested in hockey, then they run into the above issues, but many people don't even get to that point because they find the concept of playing hockey quite absurd. I don't know, just an idea.
Hockey is the private school of sports. It keeps inner city youth and lesser desirables out for the most part.
