The images from five months ago were etched in the minds of millions. A devastating earthquake had slammed Haiti and the country was experiencing widespread death, massive destruction, utter chaos.

Earlier this week, Predators defenseman Dan Hamhuis got a firsthand look at recovery efforts when he traveled with a small group from the NHL Players' Association to offer physical and monetary help.

"It was pretty shocking at first," Hamhuis said Wednesday from Haiti. "To see it firsthand and smell the smells and feel the heat and see the people up close, it's pretty brutal.

"It's very devastating what they've been through. It's a very poor country to start with. A lot of people are living in tents amongst the rubble."
