"The major Avalanche players still under contract for 2005-06 are forwards Joe Sakic, Chris Gratton, Steve Konowalchuk, Vincent Damphousse, Ian Laperriere and Antti Laaksonen; and defensemen Rob Blake, Bob Boughner and Ossi Vaananen. When the Avalanche signed Damphousse as a free agent in the offseason, the team announced it was a one-year deal, so an option clause presumably is involved."

"That list of Avalanche players without contracts for next season includes forwards Alex Tanguay, Milan Hejduk, Dan Hinote, Marek Svatos and Darby Hendrickson; defensemen Adam Foote, John-Michael Liles, Karlis Skrastins and Kurt Sauer; and goaltenders David Aebischer and Phil Sauve. And that doesn't even take into consideration whether Peter Forsberg."

So if the NHL where to introduce at $38m cap, then the Avs would need to sign a few spares, Forsberg (if he comes back), Tanguay, Hejduk, Hinote, Svatos, Hendrickson, Foote, Liles, Skrastins, Sauer,Aebischer and Sauve (or equivalent players) for around $15m. Tough ask, rollback or not. You can be sure Hendrickson is gone, but there isn't a lot of other fat to trim.

Hope that helps.
that helps a lot -and it backs up what im saying. i didnt have abby figured into my last post. even with the rollback, certainly the avs are going to have to cut someone big. it just doesnt work.
