Lombardi is already trying the, "it's too early" spin for not going after Kovalchuk hard enough. It's not like Kopitar is 35. Uh, Dean, Kopitar will probably not be in LA when he is 35.
BTW - Does anyone know the average number of years a GM stays with 1 team? I'm sure Lou knows that he will be long gone before Kovalchuk's contract expires.
Dean needs to build the best possible team every year, he is always worried too much about the future. Dean, you may not be here more than 3 more years anyways. He probably won't be around to see Doughty and Kopitar in their primes.

So now offering 15 years and 80 million bucks to one player isn't trying hard enough?
I bet if Dean had offered the 17 years, 100+ mill, and the Devils had offered the 15 years, 80 mill, and Kovy still chose the Devils, you guys would come up with reasons like "Dean must have offended him" or something.
Whose really spinning who here?
I'm uber pissed about Kovalchuk.
However, I have maintained from the very beginning, that we don't NEED Kovalchuk to get better. We don't NEED Kovalchuk to win the cup. If other quality and smart moves are made, I'll forget about Kovalchuk.... eventually.
