Betts probably misses start of season

RT @sbaicker: "It's probably closer to four months before I'm able to play again. So we'll see what the doctor says in a couple weeks" - Blair Betts

RT @sbaicker: Four months from now puts us in late November. So the Flyers very well could be without Betts for the first month+ of the regular season.

It flew under the radar some, but Flyers center Blair Betts had an update on his estimated return from offseason shoulder surgery. And it's not encouraging.

"It's probably closer to four months before I'm able to play again," Betts told Comcast SportsNet Tuesday. "So we'll see what the doctor says in a couple weeks."

If his estimate is correct, Betts could be out of the lineup until late November -- effectively missing the first two months of the Flyers' season. And he'll be missed.

The Flyers' fourth-line center, Betts was the anchor of the team's penalty kill last season. But he also set career highs in points (18), assists (10), plus/minus (plus-7) and game-winning goals (2). He's a known character guy in the locker room, and is well-liked among both fans and teammates.

Betts' projected absence could clear space for center Darroll Powe, a restricted free agent. Though he did not file for arbitration, Powe remains unsigned. With a so-called "surplus" of centermen, questions have arisen concerning how -- or whether -- Powe could fit into the team's lineup.
