Cleaning hockey gloves and skates

Does anybody have any suggestions for cleaning gloves? I usually just hose down my gear and throw in non-plastic pieces into my washer machine, but not sure what the best way to clean skates and gloves out. I don't want to soak my skates because I have a feeling that they will become damaged from staying in water for too long.

For gloves, I used to soak my old paper but they got stiff and the palms started to tear open very quickly. I since bought a better pair of gloves (I got Farrell HG300 gloves) and the palms aren't nearly as stiff. I don't want to ruin another pair of gloves, especially since these are much better than my old pair. Does anybody have any good suggestions for washing gloves out? I used to stick a deoderant ball in each glove for a day to help the smell air out but that doesn't actually clean them, they're slowly starting to get stiffer.
