I don't believe for a second that Clarke would have signed Gratton if he didn't already have that draft-pick-trade-back worked out with Tampa beforehand. I'm pretty sure it was Dykhuis who went with Renberg. Sykora wasn't a stiff on Philly's defense until a few years later.

In any event, anyone who thinks trading 4 first rounders for Gratton is sheer stupidity by Clarke must also applaud his sheer brilliance for trading Renberg for 4 first rounders. His critics like to conveniently omit the second half of the deal.
