I was in your same situation 3 months ago. I already had a decent helmet. So I went middle of the road on shins/elbows and high end on shoulders and pants since I felt that I would be doing a lot of falling.
I found my best prices at total hockey due to their free shipping and I believe it was 30% off promo code. Another GREAT site is icewarehouse with awesome customer service which had similar prices, but I would have had to pay sales tax since I am only 30 miles from them.
