If Detroit trades for players, they still take on the salaries. In fact, trading for key pieces at this point would be a worse move for Detroit. The salaries of the players already under contract were agreed upon in a less controlled economic landscape and are therefore larger - signing UFAs in a new, tigher economy would mean that they would get the same player for less money, theoretically.

Zetterberg is making $650,000 and Datsyuk, a currently unsigned RFA, made $1.5 million last year.

If your concern is crunching into the salary cap, it makes absolutely no sense to trade either one of Zetterberg or Datsyuk.

I'd predict that Whitney is being let go, Shanahan will be lowballed and might come back, and other wingers will be given offers on the free agent market. Detroit will have no trouble reassembling a contender.
