Used to leave all my gear to dry in the bag - just leave it open and sort of spread everything out. That was fine in the dry so cal air until I found a 4 ft long rattler in my bag one day... Did you know that hockey pucks make great snake killing weapons? And it's super easy when they actually try to strike at the puck... messy though

So, after that I made some home made octopus type hangers for my and my kids gear. Buy a tie rack closet hanger and some metal hook bungees in different lengths. Pinch a bungee hook closed over each of the tie "racks" and hang the gear from the open sides. Can do everything, including skates, and it compacts to nothing so it travels easily. And you can hang it anywhere to dry your gear - pull up bar, door, etc...

Cost was like 10 bucks for everything, including the bungees - get everything at your local home improvement store.

The closet tie rack looks like this (without those rubber things covering the metal loops):
