If you don't want big/bulky shoulder pads but want some kind of protection maybe you could find a pair of lacrosse shoulder pads, they tend to be fairly slim.
Also I would try different brands since sizes in different brands can vary slightly (I really like having the cap of the shoulder piece centered right over the top of my shoulder).
Also like others have mentioned stretching is very important, afterwards to keep you from getting stiff and also if you stretch a lot in general it actually helps a lot in preventing you from getting bruised/sore/etc. in the first place
