Torres has never achieved the promise once seen for him but has become solid mid-level player who has really developed the defensive side of his game. He also has the grit to make the Canucks a far more difficult team to play against. More or less a Tanner Glass but with much better wheels. Line with him, Malhothra and someone like Hansen or Oreskovich has the speed and size to be a good shut down group.

IMO Torres can provide more than Bernier at both ends of the ice and at half the price is a bargain. Hits harder than Bernier and has better acceleration.

Move puts Hodgson's position in jeopardy as I don't see Hodgson in a defensive shut down role and that would appear to be what the third line will be all about. If anything Hodgson might be better looking to push Kesler to the wing (say Kesler, Hodgson and Raymond) and thus allow Samuelsson to play with the Sedins in the absence of Burrows.

The one caution is some of the baggage, rightfully or wrongly, that Torres seems to have acquired over the years. There has certainly been dead periods in his career.

Torres >> Asham
