There isn't any time requirement really. If the Preds decide to send down Mason to the AHL, he'd have to clear waivers and the Panthers would have highest priority in claiming him.

This happened a few years ago, Carolina claimed Josh Holden from Vancouver, then sent him down when he didn't deserve an NHL roster spot. Vancouver opted to take him back. Calgary waived Rico Fata a few years back, the Rangers took him, then sent him down, but Calgary (and then the rest of the league) figured they didn't have NHL roster room either.

In general, the purpose of the waiver draft is to give players buried in the depth chart on one team the ability to play on another.
