Not everybody develops at the same pace and sometimes the player is ready but the opening isn't there. The Rangers have a habit of filling all possible holes with journeymen NHL'ers. There's is also the X factor. Sauer for instance was close 3 years ago but has been set back by numerous injuries. The same could be said for Valentenko--it's just that he's been in Europe and for most here out of sight. Byers wrecked his knee early in 08-09 and missed almost the entire season which hurt his chances last year.

Anyway prospects by age at start of coming season. Another way to look at them:

18-McIlrath, Thomas.
19-Kreider, Werek, Bourque, Horak, Yogan, Fasth, Maggio, Stajcer.
20-Stepan, Grachev, Kundratek, Niemi, McNaught, Wilson.
21-McDonagh, Pashnin, Klassen, Hobbs.
22-Weise, Hagelin, Kveton, Williams, Baldwin, Campbell, Dowzak, McCue (we missed him too), Didomete, Chappell.
23-Zuccarello Aasen, Sauer, Valentenko, Dupont, Soryal, Talbot.
24-Johnson, Byers.
