He gave soporific interviews which can infuriate the masses especially when times are tough. As an assistant, that isn't a concern. He has the rep for working well with younger players. He lost an appreciated amount of knowledge here with the departure of Terry Murray. As was stated, he is a players' coach. When he was canned, Mike Richards referred to him as "Johnny." First time I saw Stevens called "Johnny" in print. He's a better coach (read: assistant) than Randy Jones is a defenseman (OK, guilty of damning with faint praise). Not everything that was an issue here was his fault, however. He also has a good human interest story with the eye injury that ended his playing career. That was a huge factor in his continued employment with the Flyers because the team has had a nasty history with such injuries.
