He was part of the gold medal winning team at the Calgary Olympics and was drafted when he was in his upper 20s. He was a better international player than NHL player. He came to the Flyers right around the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Russ Farwell was the GM at the time and Holmgren the coach. He never really met expectations but that's not to say he was a disappointment either. The team was in a state of flux those years. At one point, he was on the top line with Lindros and Kevin Dineen. He also replaced Mike Ricci for a time on a line with Tocchet and Pelle Eklund. Eventually, he was lost to the Panthers in the expansion draft.
