Certainly understandable, as many have a distinct onesided piney bitterness without the proper amount of malt to balance it all out.
A beer like DFH 90 minutes has a very bitter piney taste, but it is also perfectly balanced imo and thats what makes it so awesome .

As for starters IPA´s I would say "Southern Tier IPA" is a solid choice, then later on Founders Centennial IPA and Alesmith IPA are interesting examples as well.

Here in europe Black IPA´s are becoming pretty popular, despite the contractictory name, but it is basicly a very hoppy stout and they can be quite good actually. I know Beer Here "Dark Hops" is brewed as an export beer to the US and imported by Shelton Brothers I think, so it should be possible to get a hold of and it is a very nice beer if you like the style.
