I think this is an important point - arguing against it sort of seems like being angry about paying premiums during a period when nothing happened that caused you to need insurance. In hindsight, it seems like a wasted investment, but when Hackett retired they needed somebody dependable to back up Esche. I would have been a little bit confused if they had spent around $55M to put one of the deepest skating lineups in the NHL on the ice but wouldn't find a reliable veteran goaltender in the event that Esche went down. Niittymaki is a sure thing for the big club now - he might even push Esche - but he wasn't last year.
