It's not that they turned to the dialect, it just depends what part of Italy they come from. Each region has their own dialect and many times, it's hard to understand other region's dialects. My family speaks the Treviso dialect, which I understand perfectly (obviously), but if you ask me to translate the Sicilian dialect, I would fail miserably.
