I think our fanbase is pre-disposed to undervaluing the defensive position in general.
Leetch was an easy favorite because he could out-skate 90% of the league and was an offensive weapon, the fact that he was also one of the best postional ( as well as physical) defensemen, and overall one of the best defensive defensemen, was lost on most.
Beukabum was another easy favorite because of his size and physical play.
Does anyone remember the fact that Zubov was one of the best power-play defensemen we've ever had? But he was often booed, and clearly undervalued. And yet he was sorely missed for years after being traded. I think MDZ is already getting underservedly maligned for trying to do something that is extremely difficult. WE NEED HIM.
As for Gerardi; he is a classic all-around defenseman. He is smart, physical (and yet not injury prone), has a respectable amount of offensive impact, and will do what is asked of him with a good attitude. Coaches must love this guy. I would NOT trade him unless it included an elite,
