I don't know enough about development (or Greiss) to give sufficient answers, but I find it hard to believe that someone who does would say it's obviously worth it after giving those variables sober consideration. Most starters I've heard of were starter quality when they were 24, and there's a lot of thirdstring quality 24-or-younger goalies out there, way more than could become starters. I don't see how the math adds up.
What suggests to me that I'm not just ignorant of something about Greiss that shows he's got great untapped potential is that everyone is reacting to this as though it was pointless waste, not as though Doug Wilson misevaluated him in some way. I don't think there's been one comment about how good Greiss is. They all seem to be implying we may as well keep him just in case, because there's no loss. But there is a loss. We want to win the cup now, he can't be relegated without being waived, and his cap space and roster spot are a liability to that effort.
Further, the fact that he was waived and not traded suggests that Wilson couldn't get anything for him and expects he will clear. If he does, that shows that not only are we calling Wilson an idiot, we're calling all 30 NHL GMs idiots for not evaluating his potential future value as greater than the cap/rosterspot cost.
You might say "we surely could have at least gotten something for him when he was younger and appeared to have more potential, and before the goalie market crash." Yes. Doug Wilson probably knows this. But Doug Wilson, unlike us, has the unfortunate liability of not being able to make decisions based on information that became available years after the decision was actually made.
