I've done the baking soda + water thing for a long bike ride before. It made me gassy and had my gag reflex going crazy.
Eat a nice big breakfast rich in carbs a few hours before you start. Make sure you have some snacks on-hand to eat... greasy arena food or chocolate bars from the vending machine will be the popular choice, but not the best one.
Just remember that you're out there to have some fun, so if you really want to get fries from the cafeteria, chomp on a Snickers bar, or even drink a beer with the team between periods then go right ahead. Stretch before and after every game, too.
