Wasn't the issue with him being claimed going down is that he would have to stay on the roster for the season? I would assume if he was pulled back up later in the season a team who might have reevaluated their goalie situation might see Ersberg as a decent option to backup? $750,000 and a UFA next season, so if say the Flyers put a claim on him it would only cost them $325,000 towards the cap this season and could let him go or retain him if needed after the season. It is a win-win.
