In terms of skills, particularly offensively, ballplayers fall off of a cliff around age 30. Some emerge, some do not. Some switch playing styles to remain effective at the Major League level and some use steroids.

For a variety of reasons, it took a long time for this Phillies core to come together. We got a brief flash of brilliance with all players in the late stages of that precious 27-29 year-old window. Now all of them except for Victorino are over that 30 year old hump. Most have depreciated in value significantly over the last two seasons, and we're saddled with a lot of massive contracts for players who performed frighteningly poorly this post-season.

Amaro let the bloom fall off the rose that previous GMs had carefully tended.
